Less than 1,600 R66 BMW's were built. Of this total, there are not many survivors.Most were drafted into the Wermacht, and many were lost during the War. This one was abandoned in Poland. It was imported into the US by Blue Moon Cycles in 2000, and sold to the next owner in 2002. The short block was rebuilt by a well known vintage BMW specialist, and the cylinder heads were rebuilt with new seats, R69S valves and coil springs-replacing the original hair-pin springs. I bought the bike in 2012. I have since overhauled the gearbox, and had the final drive fitted with the correct pre-war solo gearing.I also fitted a pair of standard compression (6:8 to 1) pistons. I have put 6,948 km on it in the last few years, and it is now a reliable, sound motorcycle, that is a pleasure to ride. It's a rider, not a garage queen.It's not a perfect restoration, but it's a solid bike, which is not the case with many untested restorations. The paint work is in good condition,but there are chips and scratches here and there.The plating is in generally good shape, and the wiring is sound and functional.The bike has had no electrical problems since I've owned it. Non-standard items: solid copper head gaskets, an electronic regulator for the generator, a Dyna Coil for the sparks, a post-war side stand (from a R51/2), two-way fork damping. Numbers of interest: The Poles ground out the original frame and engine numbers and applied their own. The Polish numbers are: engine 8094, frame 8651. These are the numbers on the California title.The last owner recovered the original numbers chemically. They are: engine 661397, frame 513656. Over the area where the engine number was ground out is OZ 80. The tappet chambers are stamped with a BMW emblem and a 38(see photos) The cylinder head has the number 266 cast in, and everywhere I went inside the motor there are BMW emblems and part numbers. The final drive is stamped 10/36 (prewar solo ratio) and there is a sideways "S" stamped on the final drive cover. This indicates a strengthened part, after early failures at the beginning of the production run. I have decided to part with my beautiful 1976 BMW motorcycle. I have owned many BMW motorcycles over the past 40 years and I can tell you this is one of the finest year and models ever made and in one of the most desirable colors. The 900cc engine is considered to be the best airhead ever built. Smooth and powerful. Produced from 1974 to 1976, but only 76 enjoys a 5 speed, this is an especially unique year in that this is the final year of what purists refer as the last of the best! It enjoys the optional classic style touring tank with black knee pads and the matching fenders and side covers all hand painted with black striping. This is a bike in which all of the parts on it have lived together for close to 40 years. Everything is original. No reproduction parts. No paint work. Frame, engine and data plate all have matching numbers This is a totally OEM unmolested survivor, in completely original condition. Clearly the bike has always been garaged and has never seen inclement weather nor is there any damage history. The paint color is Dover White. Rare to say the least. Ordered for use by Police departments and Government work throughout the world, this color commands premium prices since its introduction on the venerable /2 models. In this case the paint is 100% original and enjoys its full luster. The original alloy/ spoked wheels are perfect and shine beautifully. The mufflers are OEM BMW, not aftermarket replicas. The Metzler tires match and are in as new condition. All the electrics are in order. This is a well optioned bike as well. It has OEM Kraven bags and liners which were fitted by its original owner in 1983. The seat was built for BMW by the Korbin Seat Company and is made of soft black leather, matching white piping and is foam filled. This was a $600 dealer installed period correct option. Front and rear mud guards with original logos give it the Euro look it deserves. Chromium engine protection bars are smooth throughout and thankfully have never had to serve their function. As you would expect from a proper lady, the handlebars, risers, grips, controls and mirrors are all 100% factory original. The machine enjoys new Metzler tires, battery, plugs, condensor, point set and fresh oil and filters. Also, the fork oil and front brake fluid has been renewed. The carbs and fuel petcocks have been rebuilt. Mechanically it is one of best, smooth running BMWs. The throttle is perfect with the Bing carburetors responding perfectly. The carburetors have been completely rebuilt as well. This is the first year of the 5 speed. Gearing is perfectly mated to the proper horsepower. The braking is spectacular. Far better than you would expect from a 20 year younger bike! Buy it and drive it. That is all you have to do to enjoy this summer riding season and many future ones! This is one of the finest BMW bikes on the market at any price. Its current owner purchased it in 2003, 12 years ago with only 1,400 miles from its original owner! 800x600 This motorcycle looks nearly showroom original, including little things like the original shock and shock covers, original barrel key (not available anymore), kick start (last year available as option), and rear (European) mud flap. Perfect for daily rider or show. An east coast BMW dealer has a completely restored 1975 R90S Daytona Orange listed for $30,995 if you are looking for a nicer R90S. However, if you have a slightly smaller budget, read on. Paint is better than original, repainted by master “smoke” painter in Orange, California, (has since passed away), one of the few that did it so well, some BMW dealers used him as their restoration painter. The only parts I know of that are NOT original are the Lufmeister triple clamp, the Corbin sport seat (the original seat is also included for competitive BMW shows), handlebar ends, stainless brake lines covered with black sleeve to look original, BMW battery charger connect plug (makes keeping the battery charged REALLY easy), the Hepco & Becker deeper hard bags with secure latches and locks (these bags can hold a full face helmet). Hepco & Becker are the same folks that made the original bags for the R90S, however, the new latch and locks work perfectly and no stories about how you arrived at your destination only to discover that one or both of your hard bags fell off somewhere while you traveled like with the old “seat belt” style latches. The mechanical condition is nothing short of spectacular with matching frame and engine numbers. This motorcycle is so powerful and fast, you will appreciate the Corbin sport seat since you probably would have slid off the stock seat otherwise. This R90S is unmolested (it still has the original ignition points, no electronic ignition here!) The only engine improvements are BMW recommended improvements including gearbox rebuild with upgraded shift mechanism. The original housing was kept and re-installed in order to keep the original appearance. Past service included replacement of clutch and drive-shaft (u-joints were slightly sloppy) and ring seal. An updated crankcase breather valve has been installed. Complete carburetor rebuilds, clock rebuild including quartz movement, and Michelin tires. This motorcycle is a nuisance to ride. I can’t go anywhere without folks coming up to me with questions/comments. Most folks think it is new, the ones that know what it is, just stare in awe. If you do not like being approached by admirers, this is the wrong motorcycle for you. Sold “As is, where is”, no warranty stated or implied. This is a classic vintage motorcycle, it is NOT new and there are slight signs of use and ware typical of a 40 year old motorcycle, however, it is EXTREMELY well preserved overall. This R90S has spent most of its life on the west and gulf coast in a climate controlled environment. I was advised that this R90S was Winner of the Preservation Award 2004 MOA National Rally. Mileage is currently 48372 and will change as I am riding when weather is nice. The engine is built around a one-piece tunnel crank-case. The camshaft is driven by a duplex chain and is located below the crankshaft (unlike the /2 series which had the gear-driven camshaft above the crank). This reversed arrangement improves ground clearance for the same center of gravity and assists lubrication of the camshaft. Valves are actuated by the camshaft through hardened followers, push rods, and rocker arms. This classic motorcycle is all original and is in good running condition, all electrical devices work great, and it starts without issues.
